Hadrians Wall Country 7: Just photos of Hexham

Hexham is a thriving market town dominated by its old abbey church, the foundations of which go back about 1300 years. Much of it was built from stones scavenged from nearby Roman forts and the wall.

Almost unique among English churches in my experience is the fact there is a painting at the altar.
The church is a treasure house of woodcarving, painting, sculpture and stained glass.

A barbarian quite literally getting the boot!

The old gatehouse later served as courthouse, but is now home to offices and an art gallery.

Typically English! Try to visit sometime.
