NOT a walk in the park

After a refreshing walk around Parque del Retiro we thought it would be as equally rewarding to stroll around Madrid's other green lung, El Campo del Moro.

The 'Field of the Moor' is the royal garden, adjacent to the Palacio Real, on the western edge of the city's core. Apparently the royal family have decamped from the palace to smaller digs, returning to their sprawling estate only for state occasions.

El Campo del Moro promised acres of lawns and trees and fountains galore, but for some reason on the day of our visit the gates to the gardens were shut. All we could manage was a quick photo through the iron bars before a haughty peacock strode up to see what the commotion was and we tourists slunk off.

Then it was a long uphill walk around the garden perimeter to the front of the palace itself, not fun in the midday sun. Thankfully you're never far from an ice cream stand.

The Palacio Real and the recently finished Catedral both sit on a ridge with lovely views towards the mountains in the west.

But don't worry, there is still plenty more to see and do in the Spanish capital. Click back soon!
